Wireless as a water for the human

Wireless is irreplaceable for modern human being as water or nutrition. Cutting access to the information or even slowing down the flow will have catastrophic consequences from economical and financial till tragic fatal ones. While we understand the importance of the connection, the capacity of the wireless radio waves is shrinking under overconsumption. The limitations have to be taken away using the LiFi and other innovations.

Light as
internet transmitter

Harald Haas, Professor of Mobile Communications at the University of Edinburgh, has carved his name in history as a founder of new wireless revolutionizing connection LiFi. Unlimited capacity for the wireless connection provided with the simplest and widespread LED light bulbs is the new generation of high-speed Internet. Light is a part of electromagnetic spectrum just like radio waves used by Wifi but at a much higher frequency. LiFi is superior over wifi in various ways. The new solution is using the light spectrum which is 10 000 times greater than that of the radio waves. Smart LED lighting can share the data times faster than any existing technologies. The implementation is relatively easier than an installation of the wifi routers. The chip will be embedded in the energy saving LED light transmitting data on everything where the light reaches. In plans is integrating the receiver into the smartphone and any surface.

Father of LiFi is convinced that his invention will secure the digital world. LiFi transforms the understanding of the Internet of Things bringing the security of the digital world to the whole new level. Light cannot travel through the walls as radio waves do, literally guaranteeing that the data will not leave the room. The impact of the technology on the supply chain management and manufacturing process will drastically speed up the processes. This year Harald Haas has presented the new prototype of transmitting the data from the led light through the solar panel. Staying on the top of the green technologies wave, LiFi is getting into the sustainable business already in a couple of years.

The idea is as not outlandish as it might sound. In laboratory experiments, researchers have reached the speed of 10 gigabytes per second. Just to compare, the world record of internet speed is 100 megabytes per second achieved in South Korea. Moreover, LiFi trials in offices in Estonia showed the speed hundred times faster than regular wifi connection gaining up to 1 gigabyte per second. Let's see what inventor himself says:

mobile data

One of the most connected countries in the world is South Korea. 96% of the population have access to the hight speed internet faster than 4 Megabytes per second. The average internet connection speed is 20,5 Megabytes per second, which is four times faster than a global average. While being the fastest internet provider, South Korea manages to offer 1/3 cheaper connection than the US.

While wireless connection innovates with LiFi, the mobile data has to take a step froward. Europe has the fastest mobile internet. When will the 5G technology hit the ground? Finnish Nothern city Oulu has announced the cooperation with Nokia to put the 5G connection on trial. The city officials are convinced that new connectivity will boost the innovation and attract business investments. The 5G test network will be offered for both private and public sectors. As a public network, it will cover parts of University of Oulu campus, and industrial partners will test the new network on own premises.

“In short, companies can validate their products first in test networks provided by research institutes or in selected areas and after that companies can proceed to utilize city built open test platforms, where the actual users can provide further feedback”, says project manager Heikki Huhmo from the 6iAika-project.

Besides Finland, 5G network is tested in Surrey; England backed up with 60 million pounds funding. "5G Infrastructure Public-Private Partnership" in EU has received €700 million investment. Combined with Industry 4.0 plans and Internet of Things innovation Europe will boost the manufacturing with the latest technologies.

Insight Box

The future stands in the development of data exchange. Besides the speed, it is important to emphases the sustainability of networking and secure the privacy. Will it be the data transition via light, or improved mobile data, the connection will for sure improve boosting the businesses. Increasing the speed we will have to learn how to manage the information flow as a government, business, and individual.

About the category

Nowadays humanity produces twice as much data as through all the time till 2007. Existence of massive volume of structured and unstructured difficult to process data is the game changer. Big Data is a statistical instrument with potential to improve world’s operations, increase its speed, make more intelligent decisions, and, consequently, forecast the future.

Punda investigates how Big Data influences on our daily life and business environment, which obstacles does it bring and ways to overtake them.

Eventually, world turns to data-driven society. It is essential to know how to operate and use the data we produce.
