Cyber security: question that should be asked already
Cybersecurity concerns and discussions overflow in enterprises, national, international and personal levels today. What can be done and how to create the effective policies to ensure the stable and safe environment in the future?
Internet of Everything
There is no surprise that under the pressure of potential cyber attacks, Marc Goodman's book "Future of Crimes: Everything is connected, Everyone is vulnerable and what can we do about it" turned out to be a bestseller. As the author explains, right now the technological and digital change is having an exponential growing rate, with the speed that political and legal institutions are completely unable to react. Intel predicts that in 5 years, by 2020, the world will count up to 200 billion internet-connected devices, and each of them can be hacked. There is no escape from the smart technology, nevertheless, there are ways to make the virtuality secure. "If want to have this great modern society we're going to have to protect the critical infrastructures that are running the world," says Goodman. "Today all these computers are hackable, which means that the 21st-century modern world that we're building is a digital house of cards that can come crashing down at any moment. We need to protect it because right now, we don't have a backup plan."
All information is going online, including the records of personal location and even health data. Today it is important to secure not only buildings, cars, and real life objects that could be abused, but also the virtual corners in the companies. According to Proviti's 2015 IT Security and Privacy Survey, one out of three companies still lack the critical policies for information security and data encryption. The recent media coverage of the increasing problem has pushed some companies to pay more attention to the cyber security, most of the enterprises lack a high level of confidence that they can monitor, detect or prevent a targeted inside or outside cyber attacks. Besides, the companies are short on a perception of what is the sensitive data and information as well as the potential exposure cost.
The manufacturers are ready to implement the Internet of Things for efficient and sustainable processes. The idea of cyber-physical systems described before in the article The Future of Smart Factory, is attractive for industries as well as for logistics and urban planning. The utopian idea has the flaws in the security operating. The Homeland Security describes the problem as follows: "Though many security and resilience risks are not new, the scale of interconnectedness created by the Internet of Things increases the consequences of known risks and creates new ones."
Already in 2012, Nadya Bartol, Senior Cyber Security Strategist at the Utilities Telecom Council (UTC), has expressed concerns, as supply chains develop globally, about the threats like backdoors, viruses, unrequested features, counterfeit components, and weak data encryption and their impact on cyber security, as her graph below reviews:
Same countries are preparing to tackle future cyber threats. For example, UK recognised the talent shortage. At the moment the UK cyber security industry is worth up to £6 billion, employs over 40,000 people and is expected to grow significantly in coming years. Read about the mindset and new professions which will ensure the virtual security here: "Golden mindset of hacker"
The Homeland Security is taking steps to raise the awareness of the cyber security with The Stop.Think.Connect.™ Campaign. October 2015 was announced to be National Cyber Security Awareness Month 2015, organising the workshops and conferences around the states. In addition, they have created the toolkits materials for different audiences like students, parents, industries and small businesses to educate them how to secure the business or private life.
The threat of the cyber attacks is real, but still not recognised by the enterprises and weakly addressed with policies inside the countries. The technological, digital, and global development happened rapidly and the steps to secure the society must be taken now, on the whole levels of communities.
